Born and raised in New York, I am a first-generation Mexican American artist currently pursuing my MFA at Hunter College. My practice delves into themes of transience, community, and belonging. I explore urban landscapes through a micro and macro lens, highlighting the mundane and overlooked details of a space. Through painting, I capture the absence and presence of la comunidad referencing my local neighborhood in East Harlem and locations abroad that embody my upbringing. Working in fragments and obscuring elements provides snippets of a space, offering entry points into scenes that are both familiar and ambiguous. By utilizing mediums such as fiber paste, acrylic, and gouache, I layer and build textures that mimic the diverse surfaces of an urban landscape. This approach provides tactile context while using expressive painting techniques to enhance and manipulate the viewer’s perception.
